Quaresimali are made with flour, egg, sugar, bitter cocoa, hazelnut paste or chopped hazelnuts and cinnamon. The letters of the alphabet are shaped with a pastry bag.

These biscuits are only made during Lent (Quaresima), that is, from Carnevale to Easter. Once upon a time, they were the only sweets allowed.

There is only one pastry shop in the Sesto Fiorentino that still makes quaresimali for the Easter period.
