The name \u201cLari Cherry\u201d (PGI) has been entered in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications. That is what we read in Article 1 in the Official Journal of the European Union in date Thursday August 31 2023.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

It is the 146th protected indication and the 324th Italian food <\/strong>to receive this recognition and protection.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

This is a long-awaited result that fills President Eugenio Giani <\/strong>with satisfaction: \u201cThis is<\/em> a success for Tuscan food and wine production and a well-deserved recognition for this special quality of fruit, the most eagerly awaited of the spring among our Tuscan crops and which ripens quite early if confronted with the national landscape. This recognition is due to the efforts of the Lari Cherry Producers’ Association, whose members include many companies led by young people, and which has been supported by the Region over the years. It opens up a future of quality and new employment prospects, thanks to a production that was historically concentrated in the hills between Lari and Casciana Terme, now united in a single Municipality<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n

In the process of obtaining Protected Geographical Indication certification, and guaranteeing origin and quality, Tuscan growers have made a difference. “The production regulations provide for a wide variety of cherries with great attention to biodiversity<\/em>,” says Vice-President Stefania Saccardi<\/strong>, Councillor for Agriculture; “the producers have included, alongside more commercial varieties of cherries, more ancient, particularly fragrant and aromatic, albeit more delicate, products. This recognition acknowledges the commitment of our territories to cultivation that is residual elsewhere and was once even more widespread in the area of Lari and Casciana Terme<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n

Short product description<\/h2>\n\n

The Lari cherry<\/a> is an indigenous cultivation originating in the area of Pisa, produced in the Municipalities of Casciana Terme-Lari, Terricciola and Crespina-Lorenzana <\/strong>in Tuscany.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

Although its characteristics vary depending on the variety cultivated, it is a consistent, deep red fruit with a sugary flavour. <\/p>\n\n

There are about 36 producers of the Lari cherry, not only in the Municipality of Lari but also in Cevoli, Usigliano, Lavoiano, Perignano, San Ruffino di Lari and Boschi di Lari.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

The total annual production is roughly 150 quintals, only part of which is sold in the area, the majority being sold in markets in the rest of Tuscany.<\/p>\n\n

14 native varieties make up part of today’s cherry production, such as the dark red Papalina, the bright red Crognolo, the famous Marchiana di Lari, Morella, Gambolungo, Cuore, Del Paretaio, Di Giardino, Di Nello, Di Guglielmo, Orlando, Precoce di Cevoli, Siso, Usigliano.<\/p><\/p>\n\n
